Netball and the 2032 Olympic Games: Australia Pushes for Inclusio

As Brisbane prepares to host the 2032 Olympic Games, Netball Australia is stepping up efforts to have netball included as an Olympic sport. Historically popular within the Commonwealth, netball could gain unprecedented global visibility if its inclusion is confirmed, offering a unique development opportunity for both women’s and men’s netball, which is experiencing significant growth.

A Sport on the Rise

Netball is now one of the most widely played women’s sports in Australia. According to Netball Australia, over 60,000 participants joined local leagues in 2025, a number that has steadily increased over the years. Schools and local clubs play a major role in the sport’s growth, while initiatives like Fast5, a faster and more dynamic version of the game, attract a younger and international audience.

At the same time, men’s netball is seeing notable development. Several regional leagues have been established, and interstate competitions have recorded a 30% increase in male participation in recent years. This dual growth, for both women and men, strengthens the case for netball’s inclusion in the Olympic Games by demonstrating the sport’s broad appeal and media potential.

Modernized Infrastructure for 2032

The Queensland government has announced a AUD 4.1 million investment to modernize sports complexes, particularly in Bray Park, to meet Olympic standards. Renovations include upgraded courts, improved training facilities, better lighting, and additional spectator seating. These upgrades will not only prepare competitions for Brisbane 2032 but also leave a lasting legacy for netball practice, ensuring high-quality access for athletes and the general public beyond the Games.

Challenges and Obstacles

Despite public and institutional support, netball faces several challenges in becoming an Olympic sport. The game remains closely tied to the Commonwealth, and its international recognition is still limited compared to basketball or volleyball. Experts indicate that inclusion will largely depend on Netball Australia’s ability to demonstrate global appeal and the feasibility of organizing international competitions during the Games.

Some analysts also note that netball is perceived primarily as a women’s sport, which may affect acceptance by the International Olympic Committee, which values gender balance and discipline diversity. Nevertheless, the rise of men’s netball and international competitions such as the Constellation Cup against New Zealand strengthen the argument for mixed-gender inclusion.

Collective Mobilization

The netball community is actively rallying behind this initiative. Online campaigns and petitions have gathered over 60,000 signatures, reflecting significant popular support. Prominent figures like Liz Ellis, former captain of the Diamonds, are advocating with the Brisbane 2032 Organizing Committee for netball to become an Olympic sport.

Local clubs, regional leagues, and schools are also participating in the campaign by organizing promotional events, tournaments, and open days to raise public and decision-makers’ awareness about the benefits of including netball in the Olympic program.

Implications for Australia and Global Sport

If netball is included in the 2032 Olympic Games, it would mark a major milestone for the sport in Australia and worldwide. It would provide a global platform to promote netball, increase infrastructure investment, and encourage participation in both women’s and men’s netball. For Brisbane, it is also an opportunity to assert itself as a global sports hub and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

Moreover, netball’s inclusion could inspire other women’s sports to pursue inclusion in future Olympic Games, contributing to a diversification of disciplines and better representation of women’s sports on the international stage.
